WHAT DO TCW INTERNS HAVE TO SAY ABOUT THEIR INTERNSHIPS?

I interned at TCW in 2008 and I can honestly say I had an awesome internship. I was able to become a very important part of the process in getting the magazine out each month. Unlike many of my friends who complained that all they did at their internships was file or other menial jobs, I was out in the city interviewing people, writing stories and being published in the magazine! One of my favorite articles was when I had the opportunity to sit down over a cup of hot tea and interview an author. My friends have told me that my internship is like The Devil Wears Prada, but minus the impossibly demanding supervisor! During this internship I was able to refine my communication skills, both written and interpersonal, which helped me land a job as an editor after graduation. If you're looking for an internship that will give you the freedom to grow, offer constructive criticism and provide you with a great office environment, you can't go wrong with TCW. Spring 2008

It was just so positive! It’s so cliche but I think “hands on” at TCW is an understatement – you really get to dig in and contribute to all facets of magazine publishing. I got experience interviewing, editing, assisting with photo shoots, just for starters. I think my favorite part was how varied my assignments were – I was never bored and I even got to interview a few celebrities! Employees were always extremely approachable when it came to career advice and direction. Although my internship with TCW hasn’t landed me a job in magazine publishing (as of yet!) it was invaluable experience and a great way to get published in a classy magazine. Summer 2007

I thoroughly enjoyed my internship with TCW. You have opportunities to write different types of stories and the magazine gives you fun responsibilities like interviewing experts around the city and assisting on photo shoots. I credit my TCW internship in helping me secure an internship at a major national magazine in New York, which in turn helped me secure a full-time job in the magazine publishing industry. Fall 2004

My experience at TCW was incredible. Not only did I learn so much about working at a magazine, but it gave me the confidence to know that I have the skills to do an editorial assistant-type job. I felt like I was given real responsibilities and that what I was producing for the magazine was valuable and important (unlike past internships I have had). I was never given busy work and I never had to get coffee! My favorite assignment I worked on over my time was an article on nutrition bars and how healthy they really are. I gained more experience with requesting products from PR companies, which was very helpful. The entire staff was very welcoming to me from day one and I felt like I was part of the staff and not just an intern. My editor was great. She was so encouraging and really did a great job of giving me assignments that fit what I was interested in. I can’t say anything negative about my experience!! Summer 2007

I interned at TCW for only a short time, but while I was there I learned many things about the editorial world. Everyone at TCW was very helpful. I didn't have any experience writing articles for any kind of publication and interning at TCW gave me the chance to learn as much as I could. I learned about writing for a specific audience and how to gear articles toward their tastes. It opened up a whole new area of Communications that I didn’t think

I would be interested in. Someday I would like to go back to the writing world. Fall 2007

I didn't really know what to expect at the start of my internship at TCW. Was I going to be chasing down a puppy groomer because my boss would be just like Miranda wearing Prada?! Well, it wasn't quite like that. Every assignment, every article, every interview was fun for me. Of course, I had tight deadlines, and learning new editing techniques and skills were challenging, but I took so much satisfaction in knowing that my work counted! It counted because it made a significant impact on the overall read and feel of the magazine. I’ve interned at nationally broadcast media companies before with limited responsibilities and was surprised to see the amount of real work I was given at TCW.

The range of assignments was a plus. I got to pick out fabulous shoes at Neiman Marcus (talk about enjoying your job!), which were used in an article we ran by a foot doctor. I also interviewed prominent women in Chicago; this was an immeasurable opportunity, and I developed better interviewing skills because of it.

The staff was a plus, too. Everyone was extremely friendly and helpful with any questions I had. It was a job that definitely has glamour but not without hard work. It’s a respectable magazine, which in great part is due to the incredible staff and interns. Winter-Spring 2008
